Weekend Report April 16 2017
Killorglin Under 18/19s v Wolverhampton
Killorglin played a touring Woverhampton team at Ballymalis on Easter Sunday 16th April in good weather conditions. The Killorglin team was an amalgamation of the current under 18s squad with some of last years younger players. A large and enthusiastic squad of 26 players prepared in a good frame of mind and started the game very strongly. Wolverhampton were a talented side but depleted by injuries from playing Tralee the day before and tired from their tour schedule!
Killorglin dominated the early play and sought to take on the visitors up front with strong pick and go phases. Ultimately this was rewarded with a try by Padraig O’Sullivan converted by Jesse McCormack. Killorglin maintained the pressure and strong running by Adam Browne and Darragh O’Shea brought tries by Darragh, Cathal Doyle and Tiarnan Clifford. Wolverhampton scored before half time to leave the score at 26 – 5.
The second half saw Wolverhampton come into it more and they scored a try and drop goal. Killorglin kept the pressure on themselves though with tries by Jesse McCormack and Fionan O’Sullivan leaving a final score of 40 – 13 to the home team. A highlight was the return to action of Daire O’Sullivan after injury and he put in his trademark tackles, turnovers and carries. The match was played in a great spirit and well refereed by Richie O’Brien.
After the match the teams and supporters gathered for a barbecue and social time together. Huge thanks are due to the small group of parents who worked so hard to make this happen and to those who so generously donated food, cooking skills and equipment. Presentations were made by each team to the other and the possibility of a return trip to England. This would take commitment and participation by players and parents alike. Any reaction or ideas welcome?
